Singapore National Stadium Meets High-Use Demand with Celebration® Bermudagrass

Celebration® Bermudagrass is the turfgrass of choice at the Singapore National Stadium. As the centerpiece of the Singapore Sports Hub, the National Stadium is a multi-use facility serving as the venue for a variety of community and national events including superstar concerts and world-class sporting events of every kind.

Selecting the right turfgrass for the stadium, given its unique environment and circumstances, was crucial. The Singapore National Stadium features a retractable roof, which offers comfort options for spectators but challenges for the turf managers. Climatic conditions vary from the region’s tropical weather when the roof is open to temperate and shady conditions when the roof is closed. The stadium features state-of-the-art grow lights and a hybrid turf system to reinforce the natural turf but requires a hardy, durable grass for its high-traffic field. Celebration Bermudagrass provided the solution.

“This is a harsh environment for growing turf,” says Kirk Buchanan, Atlas Turf’s Southeast Asia specialist. “Very little sunlight reaches some parts of the field, and air movement is minimal. Celebration has exceptional shade tolerance with high plant density and deep roots to thrive in conditions like these.”

Celebration is an elite bermudagrass from US turf leader Sod Solutions and distributed internationally by Atlas Turf. Known for its extreme durability and quick recovery, Celebration meets the needs of high-use facilities such as the Singapore National Stadium, which hosts rugby, cricket, football, and more. Celebration stood up to the demands of the World Cup football qualifiers and the SEA Games. In April, the stadium will host the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens.

“During its four-year history, the Singapore Sports Hub has tried different turf systems and turfgrasses,” says Atlas Turf president John Holmes. “Celebration performed when others didn’t. With aggressive growth and quick recovery as well as the ability to perform in low light conditions, Celebration met the challenge.”
