Taking a Look at “Golf in North Africa”

Leaders in the industry came together to explore growth opportunities at the “Golf in North Africa – Setting the New Standards” event, organized by Golf Course Architecture, Thomson Perrett & Lobb, and Toro, in association with Braemar Golf.

Golf Course Architecture and partners recently hosted the second in a series of region-specific golf business seminars.  Following last year’s successful “Golf in the Middle East” event, this year, the team presented “Golf in North Africa – Setting the New Standards.”  In addition to Golf Course Architecture, organizers included Thomson Perrett & Lobb, and Toro, in association with Braemar Golf.  Event supporters were Geodesenho, Jennings Turf International, and King Golf International.

Taking place in Marrakech, Morocco, the seminar explored the future of golf in North Africa complete with challenges, growth potential, and expanding tourism opportunities.  Participants included golf course developers, architects, designers, management companies, and suppliers to the industry who currently have projects underway in North Africa or plans for the near future.  In addition to panel discussions and special presentations, the group visited Noria Golf Club of Marrakech, designed by Hills & Forrest, and Al Maaden Golf Course, designed by Kyle Phillips.

John Holmes, president of Atlas Turf International was among the participants and helped to lead the panel discussion on what it takes to build and maintain a golf course in North Africa.  “Bringing together like-minded industry professionals around this topic opened up valuable discussions,” said Holmes.  “Our work with clients in Marrakech, Casablanca, and Cairo is an indication of the positive growth already underway in the region.”
