Andy Mortimer, superintendent for TEHC International Pte. Ltd., discusses the company’s success with Platinum TE Paspalum in Singapore.
Over the past three years, TEHC International Pte. Ltd. has had the privilege of renovating three golf courses in Singapore: Seletar Country Club, Jurong Country Club and most recently Sembawang Country Club. On all three occasions, we have used Platinum TE Paspalum for the greens surfaces.
Platinum TE Paspalum was selected for these courses due to the environmental challenges faced in Singapore combined with the golfing demands year round. We needed a grass strong enough to handle on average above three meters of rainfall a year with low level light conditions combined with between 6000 – 8000 rounds of golf a month, while still maintaining a high quality putting surface.
So far we are quite impressed with the performance of the Platinum TE. The Platinum TE is generally aggressive growing so grow-in periods can be reduced. The color of the grass is outstanding, and members and guests praise the presentation and aesthetic value added to the course. When maintained properly, the greens are true and smooth with a consistent ball roll. Due to the growth habit, there is less “grain” on the greens compared to a Bermudagrass in the same growing environments.
Another advantage we have seen with the Platinum TE is a greater resilience to disease outbreaks which is always a threat growing high quality turf in a tropical environment. We have been able to reduce fungicide applications compared to some of the other paspalum varieties currently used in Singapore.
